I think I found the reason for the ball bouncing
off the players more often than it used to:

Apparently it helps to reduce lag when objects collide in a
certain manner if they bounce off each instead of stick.
This could be useful in gameplay if it is predictable.
I've noticed in the last couple of games that it seemed to be
more laggy before the game than during the game.
